Decorating Tips

  • In order to keep the icing from running off the cookie, outline your cookies before filling it in (this is called “flooding”)

  • Wet-on-wet technique

    • With this technique, you add icing to a wet layer of icing to give the appearance that the colors are on the same layer

    • You can use your scribe to swirl, drag, or pull icing to create patterns

  • Wet-on-dry technique

    • If you want to create multiple layers of color for a 3D effect, wait for the top to crust over before adding the next layer (~10 minutes)

  • Use your scribe to correct imperfections and neaten up designs!

    • After using, immediately wipe off the scribe with a paper towel after or it will harden onto the wood (if it does, just run under water and dry!)

  • If using sprinkles, add to wet icing and work quickly! Once the surface dries, sprinkles will no longer stick and you may damage the icing surface

    • When using sanding sugar, pour onto wet icing and then turn cookie on its side to shake off excess

  • If you feel like your designs aren’t turning out how you want, SLOW DOWN (it will probably take 2-3 times longer than you think it should!)

    • If you completely mess up your design and want to start over, scrape off the icing with a knife and you’ll have a fresh canvas! We have sent enough icing that you should have extra for a boo boo or two!

  • Most importantly, HAVE FUN! There are infinite designs you can create!

Cleaning Tip

  • Royal icing dries hard… VERY HARD. If you get it on your counters, floors, chairs, or ceiling (ask me how I know), pour on some warm/hot water to soften and it will quickly dissolve!
